Planning a move is exciting until money enters the conversation. A clear quote is the difference between a smooth move and a nasty surprise on the final bill. This guide explains how removalists price local and interstate moves, which fees to look out for, how and when to pay, and how to keep the cost down.
Hourly or fixed price?
Local moves are charged by the hour. At 777 World Removals that means two removalists and a truck, Monday to Friday:
| Truck | Suits | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5 tonne | Units and 1 to 2 bedrooms | $171 per hour + GST |
| 8 tonne | 2 to 3 bedroom homes | $188 per hour + GST |
| 14 tonne | 3 to 4+ bedroom homes | $199 per hour + GST |
An extra hand (+$40 per hour) is required on the 8 and 14 tonne trucks. Local jobs have a 2 hour minimum, and 30 minutes travel time is added at the end of every local job within 25 km of Wollongong. Moves from Wollongong to Sydney use the same hourly rates plus 1.5 hours travel time.
Interstate and long distance moves are a fixed price based on the volume you move, so traffic and time on the road never add to your bill. See every route on our removalist prices page.
What changes the price of a move
- How much you move: the biggest factor. A packed three-bedroom house takes far longer than a one-bedroom unit.
- Access: stairs, lifts, steep driveways and long walks from the truck all add time.
- Distance between homes for local moves, and the route for interstate moves.
- Packing: if we pack for you, that time is part of the job.
- Heavy and specialty items: pianos, pool tables and safes need extra crew and equipment.
- Timing: end-of-month and school-holiday dates book out first.
Hidden fees to watch for
A low quote is not a cheap move if extras appear on the day. Before you book, ask whether the price includes:
- travel time and fuel
- stairs and long carries
- dismantling and reassembling beds and tables
- blankets, wrapping and straps
- insurance
At 777 World Removals the rate, minimum and travel time are published on our prices page, so you know the numbers before we arrive.
When should you pay your removalist?
For any move, and especially an interstate move, avoid paying the full amount long before the job is done. A reasonable structure is a deposit to secure the date and the balance once your belongings have been delivered. Before you pay the final balance:
- check every item and box has arrived
- look over furniture for damage
- make sure the job matches the written quote
Always get the quote and the terms in writing. Verbal promises are hard to hold anyone to.
Six ways to lower your moving cost
- Declutter before you book. Sell or donate what you do not need. The cheapest item to move is the one you leave behind.
- Pack yourself, and have every box sealed and labelled before the crew arrives.
- Dismantle simple flat-pack furniture the night before.
- Choose a quieter date. Mid-week and mid-month dates are easier to book.
- Get an accurate inventory so the right size truck turns up the first time.
- Prepare access: book lifts and loading zones, and keep the driveway clear for the truck.
Why transparent pricing matters
Cheap operators often win the job with a low number, then make it up with stair fees, fuel levies or a slow crew. We believe in clear, upfront pricing, our own trained crew, and a written quote before any work begins.
