Booking removalists in Wollongong is the easy bit. Getting everything else lined up (the right truck, the lift booking, the boxes, the parking, the settlement keys) is where most moves come unstuck. We’ve been moving homes and businesses across the Illawarra since 2014, and the same handful of things decide whether a move day finishes by lunch or drags on into the arvo.
This is the checklist we’d give a mate: what Wollongong removalists actually cost, a week-by-week plan, suburb-by-suburb tips, and the questions to ask before you pay a deposit. Bookmark it, tick it off, and your move will run to plan.
What do removalists cost in Wollongong? (Quick answer)
Our local moves are charged by the hour for two removalists and a truck, Monday to Friday. These are the same rates on our removalist prices page:
| Truck | Best for | Hourly rate (Mon–Fri) |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5 tonne | Units, apartments, 1–2 bedroom homes | $171 Per Hour + GST |
| 8 tonne | 2–3 bedroom homes | $188 Per Hour + GST |
| 14 tonne | 3–4+ bedroom homes | $199 Per Hour + GST |
A few things to know before you do the maths:
- Two hour minimum on local jobs.
- 30 minutes travel time is added at the end of every local job within 25 km of Wollongong.
- An extra hand is needed on the 8 and 14 tonne trucks, at $40 Per Hour.
- Wollongong to Sydney moves use the same hourly rates, plus 1.5 hours travel time for the return trip.
As a rough guide, a tidy two-bedroom unit with good lift access might take three to four hours all up, while a four-bedroom house in Figtree with a steep driveway and a garage full of gear will take a good deal longer. The single biggest thing you control is how ready you are when the truck pulls up. For a deeper breakdown, read our guide to Wollongong removals costs or get a free quote for your exact move.
The Wollongong moving checklist: week by week
6 to 8 weeks out
- Lock in your date and book your removalist. Saturdays, end-of-month dates and the December to February summer rush fill up first. If you can move midweek, you’ll have more choice of times.
- Get quotes in writing. A proper quote lists the truck size, crew size, hourly rate, minimum hours and travel time. If a quote is just a number on a text message, keep looking. Our post on why transparent moving charges matter explains what should be on it.
- Declutter ruthlessly. Every item you don’t move is time you don’t pay for. Book a council clean-up, sell the old lounge on Marketplace or drop things at an op shop.
- Moving out of the region? Start planning early with our interstate removalists Wollongong team, as long-distance moves need firm dates for loading and delivery.
4 weeks out
- Order your packing supplies. Grab sturdy moving boxes, tape, butcher’s paper and bubble wrap. Supermarket boxes collapse when stacked.
- Decide on packing help. If time is tight, our packing and unpacking service can do the whole house or just the kitchen and fragile items.
- Sort storage if you need it. Settlement dates don’t always line up. Our removals and storage in Wollongong holds your furniture safely until the new place is ready.
- Book lifts and loading docks. Unit blocks in the CBD, North Wollongong and along the beachfront usually need a lift booking with the building manager or strata.
2 weeks out
- Start packing the rooms you use least: spare room, garage, shed, books, off-season clothes.
- Label every box on two sides with the room and a short description. “Kitchen – pots” beats “misc” every time.
- Redirect your mail with Australia Post and update your address with your bank, Medicare, the ATO, the electoral roll and your insurer.
- Arrange connections for electricity, gas and internet at the new place, and final readings at the old one.
1 week out
- Confirm the booking and share access notes with your removalist: stairs, lifts, narrow hallways, steep driveways and where the truck can park.
- Organise parking. Keep a space clear in the driveway or out the front at both ends. Clearways and timed parking near the beach and the CBD can cost precious minutes.
- Use up the freezer and plan simple meals for the last few days.
- Take photos of the back of the TV and computer so reconnecting cables is quick.
The day before
- Defrost and dry the fridge (at least 24 hours before for most models).
- Disconnect the washing machine and drain the hoses.
- Pack an essentials box: kettle, mugs, toilet paper, phone chargers, medication, a change of clothes, tools, bedding for the first night and snacks for the kids.
- Keep valuables with you: jewellery, passports, keys, important documents.
Moving day
- Be on site when the crew arrives and walk them through what’s going and what’s staying.
- Keep kids and pets out of the way. A friend’s place for the morning is gold.
- Do a final check of every cupboard, the shed, the meter box and the letterbox before the truck leaves.
- At the new place, direct each piece of furniture to the right room so nothing has to be moved twice.

Choosing the right truck (and saving money doing it)
Picking the wrong truck is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes. Too small and you’ll need a second trip; too big and you’re paying for an extra hand and space you don’t need.
- 4.5 tonne truck: studios, units and 1–2 bedroom homes, or single-item and small moves.
- 8 tonne truck: most 2–3 bedroom homes.
- 14 tonne truck: 3–4+ bedroom family homes, especially with outdoor furniture, a garage or a shed.
Not sure? Tell us what you’re moving and we’ll recommend the right truck with your quote. Our guide to calculating space, truck size and costs goes into more detail.
Local tips: moving suburb by suburb around the Illawarra
Wollongong isn’t one place, it’s a string of suburbs squeezed between the escarpment and the sea, and each has its own quirks. Good local removalists in Wollongong plan for these before the truck leaves the depot.
Northern suburbs: Helensburgh to Corrimal
Steep, narrow streets and tight driveways are common in Helensburgh, Thirroul and Bulli, so the truck size and parking spot matter. Beachside streets get busy on weekends, so an early start pays off. Further south, Corrimal has a mix of older homes and newer units with varied access.
Wollongong CBD, North Wollongong and the beachfront
Apartments mean lift bookings, loading bays and strata rules. Some buildings ask for a certificate of currency (proof of insurance) before movers can use the lift. Ask your building manager early and send the details to your removalist. Our local moves in Wollongong page covers more of the city.
Western and southern suburbs
Family homes in Figtree, Unanderra and Dapto often come with big backyards, sheds and outdoor settings. Allow for them in your quote. New estates around Albion Park and Calderwood can have unfinished roads and tight cul-de-sacs, so tell us if your street is still under construction.
Shellharbour, Shell Cove and Kiama
Moving further south? We’re regulars in Shellharbour, Shell Cove and Kiama, where coastal wind and rain mean furniture needs proper wrapping between the house and the truck. For the whole region at a glance, see our Illawarra removalists guide.

Packing tips from professional movers in Wollongong
Packing is where most people lose time, and time is what you pay for. A few habits make a big difference:
- Heavy items in small boxes, light items in big boxes. Books in a large carton are a back injury waiting to happen.
- Fill every gap. Scrunched paper or tea towels stop things shifting. A box that rattles is a box that breaks.
- Plates on their edge, like records. They are far stronger that way than stacked flat.
- Tape the bottom twice and don’t overfill; the lid should close flat so boxes stack safely.
- Keep screws and bolts in zip-lock bags taped to the furniture they came from.
- Leave clothes in drawers where possible (lightweight items only) to save boxes and time.
If packing sounds like a nightmare, hand it over. Our crew can pack and unpack the lot, with quality materials, so you only need to point at where things go.
Furniture removalists Wollongong: heavy, awkward and precious items
Some items need more than two strong people and a trolley.
- Pianos, pool tables and safes need specialist equipment and planning. Read our guide to piano, pool table and safe removalists in Wollongong.
- Art and antiques should be wrapped and crated properly. See our art and antiques moves.
- Large lounges, beds and dining tables often need to be dismantled to get through doors and stairwells. Our furniture removals Wollongong crew carries the tools, blankets and trolleys to do it safely.
Tell us about these items when you book so the right crew and gear turn up on the day.
Moving out of Wollongong? Interstate and long-distance tips
Plenty of our moves start in the Gong and finish somewhere else. The checklist above still applies, with a few extras:
- Book earlier, ideally six to eight weeks ahead.
- Agree on a delivery window and make sure someone can receive the load at the other end.
- Pack for the journey: long-distance loads need extra wrapping and well-sealed boxes.
We run regular moves on the most popular routes: Wollongong to Sydney, Wollongong to Canberra, Wollongong to Newcastle, Wollongong to Brisbane and Wollongong to Melbourne. See every route on our Wollongong interstate removalists page, or our long-distance removalists page for country moves.
Office and business moves
A business move is judged by one thing: how quickly you’re trading again. Plan it around your quiet times, give every staff member a colour or number for their desk, and back up your data before any computer is unplugged. Our office relocations in Wollongong and IT equipment moving services are built to keep downtime to a minimum, including after-hours and weekend moves.
How to choose the best removalists in Wollongong
Not all movers are equal, and the cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest move. Before you pay a deposit, check:
- A real business: an ABN, a landline or 1300 number and a physical presence, not just a mobile and a first name.
- Insurance: ask what’s covered and get it in writing.
- Clear pricing: hourly rate, minimum hours, travel time, and what’s included (blankets, trolleys, dismantling).
- Genuine reviews: look for recent Google reviews that mention the crew by name and describe real moves. You can read ours on our top rated Wollongong movers page.
- Red flags: large cash deposits, prices far below everyone else, or a quote that won’t commit to anything. Our guide to avoiding moving scams in Wollongong covers the common tricks.
